Whose Dumb Idea Is This? Kohl’s Failed!

Ladies and gentlefools. You know when I post back to back in a day, I mean business. Well I had to post about this as it came across my gchat. Afrobella sent me this link and I went AWF!!! Like cussing tourette’s.

Kohl's Ghetto Fab Wig

What in the… Who the… WHAT THEY MEAN???

A “Ghetto Fab Wig?” You have GOT to be kidding me! I just don’t know how to feel about this because it’s so blatantly ignorant that I kinda think it’s a prank they’re playing. But even if it’s a prank, it’s a bad one. I’m pretty sure it’s not a prank though. I was just trying to find something semi-decent to say. But…

Kohls! You have the unmitigated GALL to put a white woman in an afro wig and then label it “Ghetto Fab???” WHO IS YOU TALMTO?? WHO I ASK!??

And the chick in the picture is looking quite pleased with her newfound “down-dom.” Girl… BYE!

Listen.

The hairhat the woman is wearing is the actual texture of some folks’ REAL hair. To label this as “ghetto fab” is just downright offensive. When did kinky hair texture become “ghetto?” Why am always shocked when I see something like this? The worst part is that someone has probably bought that wig for their Halloween costume. Someone melanin-deficient. Ugh. iCannot.

This is a complete and utter FAIL! Kohl’s is not bout that life. Whose dumb idea was this? Now I got an attitude. *rolls eyes*

And they coulda used some Carol’s Daughter or Juices & Berries on that wig. It’s kinda dry.

P.S. AND ANOTHER THING!!! On second thought, Will Ferrell is prolly somewhere MAD that they’re calling HIS hair texture ghetto fab. I’m just saying.

EDIT: Kohl’s has removed the wig from their online store. BEHOLD THE POWER OF GOONING ON THE INTERNET!!!

But here’s the BAD news. The wig is manufactured by California Costumes, and is apparently sold everywhere. Sears, Amazon, Buy.com included. How disappointing. They ALSO need to pull snatch this wig from their sites.

Okay 1st we have the blatant careless use of the word “ghetto” again. 2ndly is this ish a real wig…or some misguided “pimps & hoes” style Halloween costume? I have questions.

    • October 19, 2010 at 3:42 pm

You have questions and I have no answers for you.

I love the Will Ferrell comment because that is surely what I was thinking. That’s just about a Justin Timberlake c. “It’s Gonna Be Me” wig.

And what’s “ghetto” about curly/kinky hair? I don’t know what I was expecting when I clicked the link, but it wasn’t this.

    I’m pretty disappointed.

    • October 19, 2010 at 3:30 pm

LMAO @ Justin Timberlake’s “It’s gonna be me” hair. THAT is funty b/c it’s so true!

The only thing ghetto about this is the neighborhood that some kohls worker went into to get this dry ass bird’s nest to sew onto a headband and market it as a wig. There’s nothing fabulous about it. And that is NOT the texture of any natural/kinky/curly hair I’ve ever seen. They need to take a football stadium full of seats.

    • highquality08
      October 18, 2010 at 12:15 pm

After looking at the picture again, this time on the computer and not my phone, the texture actually doesn’t look bad which pisses me off MORE because what’s “ghetto” about natural hair?! I’m quite heated right now. Let me log off and go rant on twitter/tumblr

    • October 19, 2010 at 3:30 pm

The wig IS dry #doe. you’re right about that.

    *hangs head in shame*
    1. Why couldn’t it be called Disco Wig, Afro Fab Wig, or some other variation? Clearly they had these ideas in the description. What went wrong between coming up with the idea, writing the description, and then naming the wig?
    2. One size fits MOST? When did this become the phrase to use? Who is excluded from this “most”?
    3. Is this how Kohl’s/the man REALLY sees our hair?

    • October 19, 2010 at 3:29 pm

      1. RIGHT! Had it been any of those, we wouldn’t have no problems.

      2. I guess some folks just got watermelon heads that this wig won’t be able to handle so one size for MOST. For that ONE person w/ the ginormous head who can’t rock it.

      3. *deep sigh* It seems so. 🙁

  9. October 18, 2010 at 12:14 pm

this is the BULLSHIT that i’m fukkin’ talking about. the fact that someone actually SAT in a boardroom and DECIDED that this would be a ‘clever’ way to address a FREAKING HALLOWEEN WIG…. omgggggggggg . . . . .

    • October 19, 2010 at 3:27 pm

Right! And why didn’t the one black person in the room say something???

    October 18, 2010 at 12:14 pm

I’m not sure Kohl’s is to blame… their only fault is choosing to feature this product on their site, however if you google “ghetto fab wig” you’ll see that a wide variety of sites carry this wig. So the real blame would be to whatever wig/costume manufacturer thought this name was appropriate in marketing this wig as such.

    • October 19, 2010 at 3:26 pm

Had they renamed it, it woulda been better. But yes, the manufacturer needs swift kick.

    • Leilani
      October 28, 2010 at 1:57 pm

I think Kohl’s, Amazon and other places that sell this wig should get some blame as well because they purchased it knowing the name was Ghetto Fab. And if they were concerned about the black people who shops there they would have never purchased it to begin with. If it were me purchasing merchandise for my store I would never buy the wigs just because of the name they carried. You have to show your customers you care and purchasing something that would offend some of them is wrong.

That being said things like this is the reason why black girls go through so much to straighten our hair and spend hours stitching in weaves because if we don’t, we would be labeled as Ghetto Fab just great for a Halloween costume. A “Ghetto Fab Black Girl” costume.

For those who are interested, here’s the number to the corporate office, Phone: (262) 703-7000

I already called to place my complaint…

We all need to call, and see how much they’ll like it, if they stop getting business from the “ghetto fab!!!”

      October 18, 2010 at 1:01 pm

      Thanks for that number!

I definitely just called and lodged a complaint; accused them of cultural insensitivity and the whole 9. Hopefully they’ll get enough calls to change it.

    • October 18, 2010 at 8:15 pm

I see you on your corporate goon steeze! Love it!

Welp this messed up my sense of self worth because my hair preeeetty much looks like that today 🙁

I need two shots of that adorable Sesame Street Clip and a Whip My Hair – hopefully I’ll be alright.

When will society stop associating Black/Black-ish things with the word ghetto? I’d really like an answer for this – tell me where to direct this question.

    • highquality08
      October 18, 2010 at 2:38 pm

Yes! Clearly someone needs to inform them (and a lot of others) that “ghetto” is a noun. A place where you live. And newsflash: the ghetto is not specific to black people.

If I hear one more white girl talk about her “ghetto booty” I’m going to cut her.

      • October 18, 2010 at 8:12 pm

Some folks getting too comfortable throwing the word “ghetto” around. Someone’s gonna get mollywhopped one day for saying it to the wrong person.

    • October 18, 2010 at 8:14 pm

Your #SelfOfSteam is all lowered b/c corporate america thinks ur hair is “ghetto fab.” I’ont blame ya.

Not only have I called but folks are starting to contact the news: CNN.

If you know anyone in the TV media please call them. Companies don’t like TV media.

This has to stop. If that wig is considered “ghetto” then that is typecasting us all.

    Email your contacts now!

Oooooo!!! If CNN gets involved with this… Chile.

Kohls states they will take down the advertising, but from a legal perspective that is not the same as saying they will STOP selling them offline, in the stores as well.

So when you shop just check and see if the wigs are in the store.

Hopefully they aren’t saying one thing to appease people and yet selling them in the store.

    Caveat Emptor. Buyer beware.

    • October 18, 2010 at 8:12 pm

Apparently, they’re only sold on their sites online. Either way, Kohl’s and whoever else thought it was a good idea failed.

  17. October 18, 2010 at 4:57 pm

    Are.You.SHITTING.ME?!?!?!

    • October 18, 2010 at 8:11 pm

      Right.

  18. October 18, 2010 at 5:11 pm

well it says its not longer available on the kohls site…and it was an internet exclusive (according to them) so i doubt you’ll find it in kohl’s stores…its still being sold all over the net though

    • October 18, 2010 at 8:11 pm

Yeah it is still available in a gang of other places. But one less. One… less.

With some Lusters Pink moisturizer, that hair might not be so bad. But to call it ghetto?! What the… So anyone black is ghetto now? If you’re mixed with black (’cause it looks like mixed hair to me), you’re ghetto? The marketing “genius” who came up with the name for this raspy hair hat needs to be smacked in the mouth AND the back o’ the head.

I think we need to go after every company selling this wig and the company that manufactures it…. they have the nerve to have it in black too!! O__o *side eye in triplicate*

    • October 20, 2010 at 12:44 am

We’d have to go after like 25 companies. I hope they take heed to this and take the initiative to take it off their shelves. But that might be too much like right.

  23. October 19, 2010 at 12:16 pm

If this isn’t a hot mess… wth are they thinking?

    • October 20, 2010 at 12:37 am

Umm… nothing, for $500 Alex. They thought they were doing something “hip” I guess. Chile…

  24. October 19, 2010 at 12:26 pm

Yeah when I saw this on the twittah, I frowned so hard. Like, I resembled Bert looking at this picture. Yeah, I’mma have to call some folks…

    • October 20, 2010 at 12:36 am

      HA! Bert. Unibrow game proper!

  25. October 19, 2010 at 3:49 pm

WTF? Okay, I had to do a double take there. So how is hair that’s naturally like that, ‘ghetto’? Afro hair is gorgeous. I’m white and I’m offended by this.

    • October 20, 2010 at 12:32 am

RIGHT! Glad you feel me on that. My side-eye was on extreme over-drive! O___o

you don’t get it! because my hair is nappy I’m consider ghetto. You are ignorant, because your not educated enough to know about different cultures and their hair life style.Ghetto doesn’t define my hair its a life style some people choose to live black, white, korean etc.Get it know?

  28. Getto Fab
    October 21, 2010 at 6:27 am

Oh and by the way the ghetto started in Poland back in the 1930’s and 40’s, when the Nazi’s were going through killing the Jews and the Polish Jews, and the Black community has taken the word and just turned it into trash, so your right your not ghetto your just trash.. You can’t complain about a wig when Blacks are so so proud of being from the ghetto, they say it all the time in raps and on the street. No ones more raciest then a Black women. Take care trashy people..

    • October 21, 2010 at 10:13 pm

You are just an ignorant fool. That is all that you are.You think rappers represent the whole black population? You are really a piece of shit.Yes the hair is nappy…but guess what?nappy is the hair texture some people have.It is a hair texture just the way some white folks have straight hair.So what the hell are you on about?Go get yourself an education and stop hiding behind the internet making anonymous comments. If you are that bold go make your statement in public let us place a face to this stupid and racist comment.Blood FOOL!

      • October 22, 2010 at 2:04 am

THIS is what I consider a complete and UTTER wig snatch. Aderinsola, my Yoruba sisthren. You are correct o!

  29. October 21, 2010 at 9:54 pm

I have a problem with the name.like WTF does that mean?My hair is not ghetto, it is my hair.WTfreakingF?I dont see a problem with them selling an afro wig for Halloween(after all, all other hair types are sold as part of Halloween costume)but the name is just too demeaning!

Wow, they can’t be for real.In the 70’s we wore our hair like that it was called a bush or if you curled your hair and bushed it out it was called a curly bush.So I take offense that Kohl’s called part of my culture ghetto. If I wore white shoes with a suite for holloween would I be called “Tony Curtis the trailer park trash”
