Red Pump

I’m Rocking the Red Pump Today for NWGHAAD

I’m rocking some fierce red pumps today because it’s National Women & Girls’ HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NWGHAAD). 2 years ago, I and Karyn of The Fab Giver launched The Red Pump Project to fuse fashion with HIV/AIDS. We asked bloggers to “Rock the Red Pump” and for people everywhere to put on their favorite pairs of red shoes to start conversation about the impact of HIV/AIDS on women and girls.

On March 10, 2009, we have the support of 135 bloggers who joined us to spread the message. Today, we’re standing strong with 1,200 bloggers who are using their platforms and influence to raise awareness about how HIV/AIDS and women.

Every 35 minutes, a woman tests positive for HIV in the United States. This is partly why we do what we do. So on this day, I’m proudly rocking my red pumps to signify the courage and strength of women affected and infected with HIV/AIDS.

Join us! And check out more on The Red Pump Project.

I asked my boy, Geo, a dope writer to pay homage to Red Pump with a piece. And he came through for me. And almost had me verklempt.

Poem for Red Pump

It’s been two years since I put them on
and walked gracefully
carrying the weight of millions
on my heart and in my spirit.
Weary and worn,
from too many years of ignorance
and neglect,
I strut,
head held high
Basking in awareness

Yes! Awareness…

my new favorite accessory

I keep some in my clutch
Dab a little on my neck and wrist
so when I walk in the room,
you can smell it in the air.

Plus you can see it in my stare…
the look of perserverance.
Came miles already, but I’m still walking,
still holding my head high

Looking to the sky…towards my limits
Get it?
That means I won’t stop until it’s finished
I’m far more than your statistic
So when you look at me,
see vision…not a victim

I stand strong for the strengthless
As the voice of my sisters,
I vow to save a life for every inch
on these pumps that I fit in

Promise to break the tradition
of men, women, and children
who perish more from lack of knowledge
of the symptoms

Although the actions of 1 can save millions,
to raise awareness takes a village
So in these Red Pumps and denim,
we march forward with clear intentions
To declare victory over
this venom
Determined to re-write what’s
already been written
I am awareness in rhythm
Fully clothed with wisdom
…and, damn, it looks good on me!

*kicks down a chair*

YES GEO!!! You better SAY THAT. See more of his work on his Tumblr page.

Oh AND here are the red pumps I’m going to rock today:

Anywho, if you’re in red pumps today, upload pics to the Red Pump Facebook page. Are any of you in red shoes today?
