No More “Rolling in the Deep” Covers!

Now y’all KNOW my love of Adele. It was well-documented in the post I wrote a coupla weeks ago titled “Why I LOVE Adele.” Apparently, I ain’t the only one who thoroughly enjoys that plump Brit with a voice touched the the Lord! 98 comments and counting!

One of my FAVE Adele songs is “Rolling in the Deep” which is pretty much a 2011 negro spiritual. It is awesome beyond words. And then John Legend did a cover of it and that ALSO gave life. I guess then, other people thought they could try their hands at the song. Which is why I’ve heard more than my share of covers. And most of them suck monkey balls.

Who gave Nicole the confidence to do this song that Adele AND John Legend slayed??? WHO DEED IT??? She sounds like a bitter, dying cat. Her voice is all flat and pitiful. She was STRUGGLING for most of the song. It looks like it hurt to e’em try to sing this song! And when she got to the “We coulda had it all” part, she was yelping. I saw neck veins. That ain’t what life is bout!

Nicole Whatsherface needs to stick to singing easy songs like *insert name of that pussy cat dolls song I can’t remember right now*. Just have a seat in your low octave and range.

I wasn’t the only one who ain’t appreciate this. My Twitfam had stuff to say.

What the Tweets said:

RT @RPinHD: Nicole (bag of Scrabble tiles) covered “Rolling in the Deep”? Gah Jesus y’all. I know Adele is tired of this shit.

RT @elledub_1920: her background singers sound better than her.

RT @CaressLepore: she need to roll her ass back to the Pussycat Dolls

RT @elonjames: The reason Nicole Szckeregwer23649aser covered “Rolling in the Deep” is the same reason why caged bird sings. They’re both high.

RT @misssherisc: Nicole Somethinmacallit’s rendition has got to be some POW torture technique. Sound like the Siamese cats from lady and the tramp

RT @ashlee1969: If Nicole’s cover of “Rolling in the Deep” was a tweet, it would be submitted to dumbesttweets…. O_o

RT @elonjames: Nicole Szckerr23649er singing “Rolling in the Deep” is the equivalent to Tyrese starring in the Color Purple…as Celie…

YESSSS at ALL this shade!!! Harriet Tubman ain’t wade in them underground waters for her anthem to be disrespected by ppl who can’t carry a note in a bucket. She AINT!

As if that wasn’t bad enough. Then I was introduced to Tahj’s Mowry’s cover of “Rolling in the Deep.” Yes, THAT Tahj Mowry from “Smart Guy” fame. Tia and Tamera’s brother. Remember him? Yeah… me neither.

Antywho, something told him he was capable of doing the song justice. Listen and see.

*blinks slowly*
*blank stare* O___O
*slit face* (-___-)
*roundhouse kicks that video*

NO SIR! Tahj just made me cranky. LAWD which of you made a requesses (word to Ices Brown) to Tahj to sing that song? Do. not. want. Return to sender. I’m offended. Tia and Tamera need to sit down w/ their brother and tell him that Nick Jr. might be hiring. Maybe he can e’em go on Yo Gabba Gabba cuz you know that’s where celebs cameo on nowadays.

Tahj is cute, but his ONLY #struggle is the big-eared one. How he gon try channeling what Araminta and Sojourner went through? NOPE. I won’t accept it. I couldn’t believe his vidjo had 980 likes and 36 dislikes. 979 people are LYING. And the other like was his mama. (-___-). Tahj doesn’t have a horrible voice but this is NOT the right song for him. AT ALL. It’s laughable that he even thought it was. His balls might need to drop first.

Oh and the people who commented on the video, talmbout he sounds like MJ. THE DEVIL IS A LAH! The hell he does! Just cuz he sings at falsetto don’t mean he’s comparable to KANG MIKO! Oh the blaspheme!

Here’s what the tweets had to say:

RT @whitberries: y’all better leave Alvin alone! It’s hard to sound good w/o Simon & Theodore as backup!

RT @MacStephanton: I HATE how to tried to change the song towards the end. don’t nobody wanna hear his welfare ass Trey Songz vibrato.

RT @tkaycj: now tahj, I’m upset that you were more focused on the pitch of you hand movements than the pitch of your voice. #SitAllTheWayDown

RT @huny: WHYYYYY did he keep pointing up like he was about to hit something pre-2005 mariah careyan?

RT @vinabean: That is the DUMBEST thing Smart Guy has ever done. I THOUGHT HE WAS A GENIUS!?

RT @brownblaze: He sounds like an injured rodent.

People have snatched EVERY jheri curl off Tahj’s head for his cover of “Rolling in the Deep.” Chile, his soul quit gloing 20 mins ago.

Nicole Schwetnmklnmhkl and anyone else who wants to cover “Rolling in the Deep” needs to have a seat \__ AND a sofa. {\__ __ __/}. Just nawl. If you ain’t got the throat capabilities, don’t try to sing something that requires pipes.

The only acceptable cover I’ve heard is the John Legend one. Everything else is not it. Adele ain’t sit on a stool with a ratchet ass side ponytail and GIVE LIFE for lessers to come along and try to ruin this negro spiritual!

As Robert (@RPinHD) said, when Adele listens to these, she prolly cackles at them. I mean, I am. Well, after I cussed.

Are we wrong or too harsh about these covers? Did y’all actually enjoy them? or do you wanna report both Tahj and Nicole to the Council of People Who Needs To Stay In Their Lanes? Tell a goon.

P.S. Adele came to Chicago for a concert and I’m SO salty that her tickets were like $300. I had the sads.

Nicole goes a little too far, but it wasn’t bad. She can sing she just tries to hard to push it and forces emotions and ends up going sharp (in general, not this video per se)

Tahj sung Michael Jackson and Bruno Mars’s songs better then this but it’s ok. I understand the MJ comparison. Listen to him covering MJ. The tone is clearly there, not the falsetto.

They’re not selling it. Just singing it for their fans. I guess people give it a hard time because Adele’s version is her version, original and personal but 900 or whatever people liked it for a reason girl, they LIKED it lol

    O-0

ooh, Lawd. You going in hard on them two. They deserve it. When I heard the song – by Adele – the other day for the first time I was like whoa. This is hot. I actually thought it had a bluegrass feel to it. The rhythm, melody, instruments and her rising pitches, and twangy yodels. I love bluegrass. I know most black folk won’t admit that, but I do. That song is the business. And if you’re thinking hey – old country music/bluegrass is just white folks blues/gospel music, then I say you are absolutely right.

later, lady…and best of luck with the BWA. I voted for you!

DNLee–I co-sign with your love of bluegrass and what you said about it. I’ll admit: I half-paid attention to Adele when she came on my Pandora station. But, listening to this song, I get the love–and I *love* John Legend’s version–it’s a “down in the holler” song and Adele and John bring that to it And people like Nicole Scherzinger and Tahj Mowry, who’ve been hyped as been so “soulful” probably caught the song’s spirit and thought they’d try it.

I get their reasoning–but they should stick with material befitting their range. And lane.

They say that imitation is a form of flattery but this here a straight up condemnation. Adele sang her butt off and these weak covers are an insult to her hard work. John legend did his thing with it too. I think the only other people who should be allowed to cover this song if they choose too are Jennifer Hudson and Jill Scott. Everyone else can keep seated.

Nicole Scherzinger’s version was too yodel-y or whatever you call that thing she was doing in her throat. However, I could listen through most of her version. It wasn’t an improvement or refreshing, but it wasn’t heinous. I turned Mr. Mowry off as soon as he started singing. NO.

Ha! Thanks for using my tweet! 🙂 I found another cover of Rolling in the Deep. He is no Adele, but he ain’t no (double negative intended) Nicole or Taj either. Let me know what you think! Ha!

Well, I guess people liked the song so much they had to express how they felt albiet not so well. But now I want to check out the John Legend version and yes, I absolutely love some Adele. Where a girl of 21 gets that kind of soul in her voice I have no idea. I could hear Aretha singing that song decades ago.

Okay, I expected a lot worse from Nicole after reading this but I didn’t actually hate it. She’s DEFINITELY no Adele and she did shout a bit but she wasn’t awful. Now Tahj…I lost track of how many times I involuntarily said “Oh Gawd” and rolled my eyes. He has a decent voice but that was just painful.

  9. May 30, 2011 at 8:35 pm

Tahj overemphasized every consonant in that song. Like he was singing for people who speak English as a second language to reeeallly understand the lyrics. or something.

    Nicole…no!

Tahj sounds like a mixture of an alto Smurf & a soprano Munchkin from the Wizard of Oz.

Luvvie, “I saw neck veins,” caused my death.

LOL I’m just saying. She was struggling.

I won’t judge her.Only because ever since I met her and she had me at work an hour longer than I was supposed to be there, I can’t judge her properly. I’m still mad and this was months ago. lol

But I really wish people would leave Adele’s songs alone, I love her. And I just want to kick Tahj in the throat!

    • June 4, 2011 at 8:37 am

People do need to leave Adele’s things be, esp if they can’t do it proper justice. Just don’t e’em do it.

Luvvie! Oh how I’ve missed reading you at work each day! Ok, I know I’m all late on this post, but here’s my thing – Adele and John Legend gave soul to the song. It’s not enough just to sing the song…if there’s no soul, no true emotion to it, then you’re just singing a hymn in church while wondering if Granny made greens for Sunday dinner. I love Adeles version…when I heard John Legends cover, I felt ashamed, like I literally played his heart! I wanted to call him & apologize and tell him we can still have it all! My heart aches when I hear Adele or John…Not so much when Dumb Guy sang it, more like heart burn instead of heart ache…I was more focused on the ring-thingies on his hand and the lightbulbs in the background.

    • June 4, 2011 at 8:32 am

LMAO!!! right. John and Adele sang that song like they were currently in the fields. Tahj… O____O

  15. June 8, 2011 at 9:31 am

    *_*

i dont even care to waste a sigh on this here imitation of life.

Tipsy, with an ear infection and off that codeine…Nicole’s vid is passible. If i didnt have ANYthing better to compare it to, i would say ehhh she aiight.

Taj channeled all things Jed Clampett 2.0 the metrosexual version. I cannot and i wont. As soon as he cleared his throat i knew I was in for a hard knock 2 mins of life. smh.

  16. […] and I’ll clean this up. First of all, if you’re going to remake a song, make sure it’s a good song. No one wants to have their bandwidth overrun by Eamon 2.0 (or, more accurately, Frankee 2.0.) […]

nicole wasn’t turrible, but, if you sing an Adele song, you have to be ready to be compared to Adele. And Nicole aint Adele on a bad day, with a sore throat and congestion.

Tahj was all types of wrong though.

  18. October 26, 2016 at 3:53 pm

Each person sings a song differently…. and each person hears it differently. It beautiful that either of these people thought that they could put themselves out there to be heard by the world. That takes more courage then it does to sit here behind their backs cutting them up!! Whatever happen to if you don’t have something nice to say… don’t say anything at all? “Judge not, lest you be judged”
