What We Wore to the Academy Awards

When the day of the Academy Awards arrived, Afrobella and I got up super early so our glam squad could come through and make us look like princesses. And they REALLY did. First, we got our hair done by Felicia Leatherwood, the hair whisperer. Felicia is not only one of our great friends, but she’s a hair guru! She had already done my hair 2 days before by washing, conditioning and then retwisting my locs. Then she put them in bantu knots so they were curly. The day of, all she had to do was pin my locs and VOILA! Also of interest, that flower in my hair is actually a rink. Felicia wanted to put an accessory in my hair and I remembered that I had this ring. She pinned it into my hair and it was PERFECT! My hair was LAIDT like butter on toast.

Then, we got our makeup done by Nicole Evans, an amazing makeup artist! She beat our faces like DRUMS using a lot of Avon products! Afrobella broke it down on her post HERE. Our prep was filmed by the incredibly talented graphic and video designer Krystle Rowry. Thanks to AVON for sponsoring our glam team! See the video below of our prep.

*tears* I might have ugly cried while watching that video. SO many props to Krystle for putting it together so well, and Kirby Lauryen, who is SUPER talented. She actually created this song JUST for us! Can you imagine??? *faints* I can’t even deal with all the talent around me.

So, now to what we wore!

What I Wore

Since the day we found out we were credentialed for the Academy Awards, everyone asked us “What are you gonna wear?” and Afrobella and I began our hunt for the perfect dresses. I got 3 offers from some independent designers for dresses, and they all rocked, but the dress I went with was actually one I wasn’t even checking for. I wanted to rock a cobalt blue dress that was fitted, with a mermaid tail. What I ended up with was the opposite, and I couldn’t be more happier.

I found Hannah’s Boutique online as a store that had the dress I described above, so I went with my girl Renisha and Afrobella. When I showed up, they didn’t have that dress in stock. Instead, Susan, the owner suggested I tried on this grey dress with beading. When I saw it on the hanger, I was all “meh” but Re and Patrice convinced me to try it on and the moment I did, I knew I had found THE DRESS.
I REALLY felt like I was Cinderella going to the ball in this gown, except it didn’t turn to rags at midnight. I got sooo many compliments on it, and it had me feeling myself. When I was fully dressed, I sure did look in the mirror and yell “LUVVIE! GAHTDAMBIT YOU FAHN!” Anywho, pics below of my whole #alphet.

What Afrobella Wore

Designers seem to want to put plus size folks in big muu muus and tents, and Patrice was not having any of that. But one designer really stepped up to the plate in a dress that was fitted AND fitting of Afrobella.

In her signature purple, Afrobella rocked a custom dress from indie designer Sofistafunk and she looked soooo pretty! Her dress was vibrant and princessy and adorabo. AND because of the color, it was easy to see, according to the many people who spotted her on TV on the red carpet. That purple was eye-catching and folks spotted Afrobella on E! and ABC.

Check her out showing up and showing OUT below:

A special thanks to Jessy Fofana of La Rue PR for helping us secure our jewelry, and really holding our hand through this outfit process!

By the way, if anyone is looking for a prom dress, wedding-related outfits or gala stuff, I really recommend you check out Hannah’s Boutique. They really came through for a G with this dress. If you mention my site, you’ll get $25 off any regular price purchase so getchu a piece and be fierce!

Thank you to the Dream Team for making us look and feel like princesses. Y’all made us slay effortlessly on that red carpet. MUCH MUCH LOVE!!!

Girl yall both looked goregoeus, Yalll were just slaying hoes. I will admit from the other post, wasn’t sure I liked Afrobella’s dress, but looking at it here I love it. She’s look like a Disney fairy GodMother all shuny and sparkly, so pretty.

You look very pretty too, and I lvoe your shoes, cause they were glittery.

Also can’t wait for your snarky update of the Oscar’s, I knoe someone is going to get roasted. lol

She DID look like a princess, ain’t she? I told her that. The Oscar’s has minimal foolery. Everyone behaved and acted like they had sense so I didn’t have much snark. Now if this were the BET Awards… O____O

Somebody really needs to use y’all as models for some animated magical princesses. I want my daughter to play with dollies that look like y’all in those #alphets. Shoot, I want some collector’s edition dolls of y’all looking like that. The kind that’s got a full page ad stuck inside of PARADE magazine, where they go on and on about the exquisite, hand-painted, lifelike detail…and each limited edition piece is hand-numbered on the bottom of the foot. Yes ma’am.
