Aspiring TV Writers in DC Area, Check Out the Evans Duo and “In the Writers Room”
This past year has been amazing for me in terms of opportunities. It’s actually been mind-boggling. One of the things I got to do this summer was work with Stacey Evans Morgan, a veteran TV writer and producer in Hollywood. The project we worked on is still top secret but for me, it was a crash course in all things TV. And she was just so open to guiding me and she’s become a mentor (she just might not know it yet) to me.
Stacey is awesome. She’s worked on so many shows, like Living Single, The Parkers and One on One. She even co-starred on one episode of Living Single. Here’s her and Kyle Barker on that ep where she played his girlfriend, Dionne.

Kyle Barker (T.C. Carson) and Dionne (Stacey Evans) on Living Single
Win.
And what’s even cooler? This past August when I was going to Equatorial Guinea, I was at the airport waiting to board the flight. Guess who shows up? STACEY! And her brother Bentley Kyle Evans! What were the odds?
Now lemme tell you about Bentley Evans. He’s Stacey’s brother, and also an epic veteran TV writer and producer. If his name doesn’t sound familiar, then you haven’t paid enough attention to the credits of some of your favorite TV shows from the 90s, like Martin and The Jamie Foxx Show.
In fact, Martin fans remember the episode where he went to the DMV to renew his license and he ran into an admirer who called him “Almond Brown.” Well Bentley was Almondy!!! Lemme refresh your memory if you don’t know:
“Now you know you heard me, Almond. I don’t e’em know why you tripping. Witcho almondy self.” CHILE… LMAOOOO!!! That rubber jacket, the song he made up, and the twirl! I get my life every time I watch that episode. Every. Time.
But yeah, it was cool being on this trip to a strange country with Bentley and Stacey. They were part of a different delegation from mine (they were in the VIPs) but we kicked it many times. Here’s us after an exhibition basketball game:

Ennehweighs, I’m a fan of the Epic Evans Duo. They’ve collabo’ed on a couple of things before, including TVOne’s Love That Girl and Family Time and their latest project together is “In the Writer’s Room.”
In the Writer’s Room is a 2-day workshop that Bentley and Stacey do around the country, teaching folks the ins and outs of the TV business. They’ll be talmbout how to develop scripts for TV and sell them to networks, as well as talking about the art of storytelling for sitcoms. For aspiring TV and sitcom writers, you better getchu a piece. This will be dopeness.

The workshop is in partnership with the Organization of Black Screenwriters, and will be held at Howard University on September 29 and 30, from 9am-6pm each day. It’s $150 for the whole shebang, and that’s not e’em expensive. So get your coins together, head to Eventbrite page (Option 3) and register for it.
I was JUST in DC last weekend. WHY COULDN’T IT HAD BEEN THEN??? *shakes fists vigorously* Womp. I’da totally been there, in row 1, looking like a groupie. I’m tryna elbow Stacey to come to the Midwest with it though, and she said they might be here early 2013. YOU KNOW Y’ALL WANNA COME DO THIS HERE!
You can LIKE the In the Writer Room FB page for more info, and follow Stacey (@SEMorgan) and Bentley (@BentleyEvans) on the Twitters.
So who’s interested in going? Also, did you cackle at the Almondy clip like I always do?

That episode cracks me up EVERY TIME. You could even tell Martin was trying not to laugh, that’s why he didn’t look at the camera when Almond walked away. Bwayahahaha!!!!
That episode is one of my favorites. And I don’t know how Martin kept a straight face.
Wow! Sounds awesome. If they come to the midwest, I’m there!
Right??? I’m just waiting!
I’m going!! I just wish there was a way to attend ALL of the workshops because they all seem so informative. Thank you sooo much for sharing this, Luvvie.
