Today is the 4th annual Social Media Day so rejoice! Mashable created it in 2010 to celebrate the digital revolution, and all over the world, people are celebrating the day with meetups and events and whatnots.
What social media has meant to me has been the power to connect to people you might not otherwise reach. Ever. It breaks down the 6 degrees of separation to two, and it expands your possibilities. I’m a true testament of the power of social media and technology because this blog and my presence on Facebook and Twitter changed the trajectory of my life.
Because of this crazy web thing, I’ve had countless moments of awesome. The first real meaningful thing was in 2007, when I reconnected with my first ever best friend who I had lost touch with for 15 years (she found me on Facebook). That was what made me really start paying attention.
Since then, so many great things have come from my online presence. I won the Women’s Media Center Social Media Award and got to give a speech in front of Barbara Walters, Anne Hathaway, Gloria Steinem and more. I also got to do press coverage at the Academy Awards, on the red carpet and backstage. I had a weekly column on the website of a major publication. And that was just 2012.
Now I make a living through my work online, so yes, I do believe in the power of social media so I celebrate this day with a Bro Franklin gif.
So tell me what social media has done for you. What are the best things to have come out of your presence online?
