5 Reasons Why I Loved ‘Boy Meets World’ And Why I’m Excited for ‘Girl Meets World!’

Some of us 80s and 90s kids used to watch Boy Meets World religiously, following the stories of Cory, Topanga, Shawn, Eric and Mr. Feeny as they went from middle school to high school to college. It was about love, life, growing pains and growing up. It was cute, sappy and hilarious. We didn’t mind that somehow, Mr. Feeny ended up as their teacher and principal every step of the way. In fact, I think we loved it more because of that.

I loved Boy Meets World fiercely. FIERCELY! And Disney just announced that they’ve picked up Girl Meets World so I’m revisiting one of the favorite shows of my childhood.

Why I Love Boy Meets World

5 Reasons Why I Loved Boy Meets World

5. The Season 5 & 6 Theme Song – Even after all these years, I still jam to the Boy Meets World Theme song. It was during a time when show song intros were super important and you never wanted to miss it because it was part of the experience. The theme song to this show was so catchy and I felt (and still feel) no shame singing along to it loudly. In case you forgot, here it is:

When this Boy Meets World, Boy Meets World. Wandering down this road, that we call life is what we’re doing. It’s good to know I have friends that will always stand by me. When this Boy Meets Woooorrrrlllldddd.

It’s stuck in your head now too, right? You’re welcome!

4. Eric – Face it. I thought Eric was adorable. With his 90s bob that was always luxurious. Dude looked like he stepped out of an herbal essence commercial all the time. I didn’t care that he was dumber than a box of rocks. He was so cute! Also, his Mr. Feeny call gave me what I needed EVERY TIME!

Fee-hee-nay feeny eric gif

And this call for Mr. Feeny was awesome because Mr. Feeny was awesome. That brings me to my next point.

3. Mr. Feeny’s gems of wisdom – Mr. Feeny was the show’s conscience, and the best teacher EVER. He was like Yoda in a tweed suit. No matter how much his favorite students acted up, he was there to teach them a tough lesson (and follow them throughout their academic career. Some might call that stalking but I call it commitment). Mr. Feeny stayed dropping gems of wisdom on Cory, Topanga, Eric and Shawn.

Mr Feeny wisdom

Come on and PREACH, Feeny! He gave us life’s manual with his words. I was always here for George Feeny wisdom. Also “It’s not enough to desire to succeed in this cold cruel world. Then you simply become a part of it. You must also have a desire to change it.” I got that from an abandoned Twitter account called @FeenyWisdom. I want whoever is behind it to kick it back off.

2. Cory and Shawn’s Bromance – I have a soft spot for bromances because we too often assume that strong friendships are just a thing women hold dear. But nah. Bromances are real outchea and I loved Cory and Shawn’s so much. They went through thick and thin together, and nothing could keep them apart.

Ciry Shawn Boy Meets World

And they gave each other advice through love and life. Like the time Shawn told Cory that “It’s raining because God is crying. And he’s crying because He created you and Topanga to be the role model of the perfect couple for the entire universe.”

So cheesy and so perfect and I might have sniffled a little bit. AAWWW!!! BEST BROS FOREVER!

1. Cory and Topanga’s love – Cory and Topanga have to be in my top 5 favorite TV couples EVER! I mean, how could you not love them? They were THE CUTEST! BuzzFeed has an awesome and depressing post about how your love will never measure up. Because in the 6th grade, they used to say things like this to each other:

Cory and Topanga gif

GAHHHHH!!! The cutes! It’s too much for my thugginess. TOO. MUCH. CUTE! Even when they broke up, we knew they couldn’t be apart for long. They had us writing “Cory + Topanga = 4EVA” in our Trapper Keepers. From their first kiss to Cory’s wedding proposal. Chile… I was so invested in their love and they rarely let me down. In fact, I wouldn’t mind if they just went ahead and got married in real life so I could get my ENTIRE LIFE!

All these reasons and prolly a couple more (like how Shawn and Angela dated and it felt right and it wasn’t some token situation) are why I’m so excited that Girl Meets World is coming next year and will be on the Disney Channel! WHOOOOOT!

Cory and Topanga are now married with a tween daughter and the show is about their lives. Cory is a teacher at his daughter’s school (the new Mr. Feeny) and Topanga runs a pudding shop there. Yes, that pudding shop business gave me pause and made me side-eye a little bit but I shan’t let my excitement be waned. Look at this pic:

Girl Meets World 2014

CORY AND TOPANGA ARE BACK!!!!! Come on, somebody! Look at the way Topanga is staring at him lovingly. I die.

I hope Disney makes us proud and keeps the heart of the show. We’re about to skew their demographics because the 24-35 year old crowd is super excited here. This show might be targeted to teens but some of us who are more grown and wanna reminisce about our childhood will be tuning it. DON’T MESS THIS UP, DISNEY! DO. NOT. MESS. THIS. UP.

Good times. I’m so ready!

Are you as excited that I am and will you be tuning in? Also, why are we overgrown?

P.S. You can follow the cast of Boy Meets World on Twitter. Turns out that they’re all still BFFs. AS IF THEY WEREN’T CUTE ENOUGH!!! @BenSavage. @DanielleFishel. @RiderStrong.

Edit: And this happened.

AS I LIVE. I DIE And clearly, we now go together.

Yes to your top 5!!! Yes and amen to all of it!!

I was also excited to hear of a Boy Meets World spin off BUT I’m trying not to get my hopes up too much because I’m sure the focus is not on the original BMW cast/story lines and I’m sure the cheese factor is through the roof since it’s on the Disney Channel (Hannah Montana anyone??)

I have to admit I got excited when I read the announcement about this show. I started watching Boy Meets World with my little cousin and really enjoyed it. I just want to see Rider Strong (Shawn) and Trina McGee (Angela) reprise their roles…I loved their storyline.

I’m trying not to get too excited about this spinoff. I don’t want to get excited and the spinny is something that will shatter all my fond memories of Boy Meets World.

I will reserve all excitement/ judgment until I see the first episode….

I love this show! Still have the last three seasons on VHS. (Wait, did I just tell my age?)

This show is gonna be so full of Disney cheese and I am here for it.

Quick, in the last episode, what did we find out “Cory” was short for?

Yes, I loved Eric! (What are you gonna do when your hair grows back? It’s not gonna grow back. I’ve got my receipt!)

Ok, first…maybe pudding is the new cupcake?!

I’m with you. I loved Boy Meets World. It was wholesome. Just a regular family (dad worked at a grocery store for goodness sake). And that little sister of Cory’s was all sass but in a cute, not hurtful or kid too grown way.

My main reason for watching was Ben Savage. He was totally adorable from the moment the show aired the first time until the last episode. The writing was great for him and it set him apart from his real big brother, Fred, from The Wonder Years.

I miss this show and others like it. Fingers crossed for the new one.

YASSSSS THIS LIST. YASSSSS THE UPCOMING SHOW!! I will be THERE.

The MTV2 reruns on Saturdays have been shining light on my nostalgic life lately. I still crack ALLAWAY up when Eric does the “FEE-HEE-HEE-HEE-NAY” bit. With the clawing motion and the “AHH CHYAH CHYAH EEE!” part. I be on the FLOOR.

I am going to admit that I watched this show when I was in my mid 20s, much older than the target age. I would watch it before I hit the club and would never miss a show. #don’tjudgeme!

If Disney doesn’t do this spinoff right, wigs will be snatched and sternly worded letters will flood the production office.

“Lose One Friend, Lose All Friends, Lose Yourself” Eric Mathews aka Plays with Squirrels- “Boy Meets World”
This was the first quote I ever put on Facebook. It got me through a tough transition time in life when I moved away from my hometown to go to high school. Boy Meets World is the epitome of my adolescents. Also I have been looking forward to Girl Meets World since they announced it last year that they had started filming the pilot.

Some quick notes about “Girl Meets World”:

GMW got picked up for a full season order *before* the pilot episode even aired. That’s a rare display of faith for a network to make, even on cable.

The producers are more than open to the idea of BMW cast members popping in to make appearances on GMW and the BMW cast are equally open to the idea of being on the show. Feeny is *confirmed* for at least the pilot (word is, he’ll be Corey’s superior as the school where Corey works), Rider Strong is in talks to bring Shawn back and as for Corey’s parents…well, the actors in question have hinted that a Thanksgiving episode would be a great time to bring back the now grandparents.

    • June 18, 2013 at 8:49 pm

Ooooo! Thanks for this info! I hope Shawn comes back and lives next door to them. It’s only right.

        June 19, 2013 at 12:16 am

THAT statement is why I love you, Luvvie. Of COURSE Eric lives next door!! And of COURSE Shawn must live the next street over. With his wife Angela and their four kids. Just sayin.

      • Daniel Ben-Zvi
        June 19, 2013 at 7:49 am

While I do agree with you about Shawn being their next door neighbor, I do want to stress I’m not trying to get your hopes up *too* high. It’s currently unknown to what extent Shawn might be in GMW, just that he’s in talks to come back.

I agree with Luvvie’s reasons, and I will also add TOPANGA’S HAIR!!!

    • Daniel Ben-Zvi
      June 18, 2013 at 9:16 pm

Great story involving Topanga’s hair, the final scene of the final episode and a producer freakout (not caused by Danielle Fishel, please note):

While filming the final episode, the final scene specifically, the director noticed something was different about Topanga. Something that apparently no one had ever noticed about the character before. Specifically, that she had a neck tattoo that, because of the way the hair department laid her hair for the final scene, was clearly visible for the first and only time in the show’s run. The producers freaked but the director pointed out that they had no time or money for reshoots and had to shoot the scene as things were. So, look closely during the final scene and you can see a bit of Chinese writing on the back of Danielle Fishel’s neck.

      • June 18, 2013 at 9:19 pm

OOOOOOO!!!! Omg! That’s so good. Now I wanna go rewatch the final ep. Daniel, you’re my new fave person.

I have one question & one question only: I’m pretty fashion conscious but what, pray tell, is a tweet suit ma’am? Is it a suit one wears while posting witty remarks on Twitter? Or is it what bird watchers wear while out in the field? I’m sorry; that was 2 questions wasn’t it? My bad…

    • June 18, 2013 at 9:43 pm

I meant TWEED. My bad. Hursh. lol

  22. June 19, 2013 at 12:04 am

Boy Meets World was my show. I can remember it coming on every Friday night part of the TGIF line-up. Memories….

I started watchin BMW from the beginning because my 9 year-old. self tbought Topanga was just light-skinded. With a name like Topanga, how was I supposed to know different? It wasn’t until season 3 I realized she was white! I thought was the only black person who loved this show. it was only a few years ago that I realized it was a thing among a lot of poc kids. So yes, I got my entire life off this post. And I loved Angela! The actress who played her was amazing in that she fit in seamlessly with Shawn, Topanga and Cory.

Can we talk about how when Cory and Topanga got married they asked for the fans to RSVP for the wedding at http://www.coryandtopanga.com? What great use of social media. Meanwhile, one day I went to check that website years later because I’m a nerd like that, and it just directed me to the abc website.

I’m excited. Guess I can take the ban on Disney-and-their-shows-that-are-not-appropriate-for-a-4-year-old off in my house. We can only do Disney JR since she started telling me that some boy was the guy for her………………that’s a whole ‘nother story.

I’m super excited. BMW still stands as one of my favorite shows, period. And I watch the reruns when I can.

And a pudding shop, oddly enough, makes sense to me. Seeing as how Topanga was always so “earthy” and “hippie”, it makes sense that she would be pushing something “wholesome”. Although, I don’t remember what Topanga majored in in college, does anyone remember what they each went into? Was it ever said?

YAY!!!!!! I LOVED that show!!!!! That was one show I refused to miss no matter what. I cried when it ended. Ion’t eem care who knows! This is amazing. Maybe now, my 11 year old will beleive me when I tell her BMW is not a new show- it’s just new to her. Lol!!!!

Man, I loved the theme song from the first 4 seasons. Ya’ll gotta excuse me, I’m a former band nerd/quasi-classical junkie…lol. Furthermore, I’m not ashamed to admit it, but I’ve thought long and hard to name my first (or second) born daughter Topanga (should I ever DECIDE to have kids-lol). Yep, I loved it that much lol.
