I’m Digging Nicki Minaj Lately and It’s Not For Her Music

Y’all know Nicki Minaj’s music tapdances on my last nerves and she dresses like a highlighter factory blew up. But she’s the most popular female rapper out there so she’s everywhere and I just have to deal. And avoid listening to her tunes. Or staring at her pictures for too long.

But lately, I’m feeling a strange affinity towards the lady who talks in 5 accents in one sentence, and it’s because she’s been dropping some truth gems on us.

I came across this video of Onika spilling tea and truth about sexism and commanding respect while putting on some eyeliner. And if you can listen in spite of the weird changing voice, you’ll know she makes some great points about being a female rapper in a misogynistic world.

RESPECT! Nicki talks about how you have to work harder than the guys to get the same respect as they do. And when you are demanding and ask for what you want, you’re a bitch. Even though, you’re just standing up for yourself and asking to get the treatment you deserve.

“Now when I come to a photoshoot, let it be of quality… because I put quality in what I do. I spend every fiber of my being to give people quality. So if I turn up to a photoshoot and you have a $50 clothes budget and some sliced pickles… you wanna know what? I AM gonna leave! Next time, they know better, because had I accepted the pickle juice, I will be drinking pickle juice right now.”

YOU BETTER SAY THAT! Nicki in all her pink-wigged glory just gave a word. We teach people how they treat us, and we shouldn’t accept pickle juice. And when she says “When I am assertive, I’m a BITCH. But when a man is assertive, he’s a BOSS,” I threw an invisible handkerchief and applauded.

Call her (and the rest of us Type A ladies) a bitch all you want but…

bitches get stuff done gif

Chile, look. She managed to articulate the struggle of a billion assertive women in this 2 minute video and I’m so here for it!

Then yesterday during the Love and Hip Hop Atlanta episode where Kirk showed that he ain’t worth half of a gram of damb, Nicki tweeted and called him out on his bullshit. Because what’s incredibly disrespectful is cheating on your pregnant wife on TV. And the ice box where my heart used to be melted for her. I kinda fux with her for reading Kirk for FILTH like this!

Necole Bitchie pulled her tweets into a paragraph:

Damn my n—a, after 15 yrs u wld embarrass the mother of your child while she’s pregnant on nat’l tv like that? cornballs on deck. for reality tv tho? My n—a…that s–t ain’t worth it. If you’re trying to convince someone you’re not gay that’s the wrong way to go about it. Your wife is pregnant. U do that on nat’l tv? GTFOH.

Having problems is one thing, broadcasting it on a tv show for some air time is another. That woman stayed by your side. how dare u? And i dare u to say it ain’t none of my business. u done sold it to vh1. Its everybody business. Its levels to this s–t…lol…the lower level minds will never understand that. You’re willing to ruin a 15 yr bond for vh1? el stupido.”

REEEAAADDDDDD, HUNNY! Wait. I need Nene’s help here.

YESSSS! Chile… I don’t know what’s happening but I’s changing. I’m liking celebs I previously couldn’t stand, watching channels I’ve written sternly-worded letters about and rocking more flats than heels lately. LOOK AT ME. I AM CHANGING!

But yeah, I’m digging Onika Maraj lately and I’m not ashamed to say it. Chick does command respect, even if she dresses like a troll doll. I still can’t listen to her music though.

So whatcha’ll think of that vid of Nicki’s?

Edit: SHEESH! I say I like something Nicki Minaj said and folks are on my FB fan page acting like I said she is the reason for life. Relax. I know she’s not the originator of the concept of bitch/boss but I’m giving her props and you will deal. Lawd.

I’ve since arrived for Nicki as well. I’m not a huge fan of her music (but I must admit when she actually RAPS and doesn’t do all that sing-songy pop trash, I can deal), but she is dropping truth bombs when it comes to sexism, misogyny and encouraging girls and other women to be their best selves. I really love her for that.

Still not on team Nicki…WOMP. LOL
Yeah she dropped some knowledge. Ok cool she’s not a dingbat I’ll give her that. But I’m sticking to my guns on this one. Still don’t like her.

I’ve always liked Nicki. She is an entertainer so I get all the hair makeup etc. But like any woman who is in essence a career move/shaker or entrepreneur, you have to be commanding and assertive (but necessarily aggressive). I respect iher for setting personal standards in a world where many have little to none.

I have never been a fan of her style or her music, but I’ve been checkin’ for Nicki Minaj truth bombs for a minute. I’ll pass on the music, but as a woman who says what she needs to, I give Nicki a ton of respect

A black woman who “needs a permanator”. Yup I’m good on Nicki too. Ya’ll can have her.

Poor thing..then she is doubting herself in the end saying “Dont use it..it’ll make me look stupid”. No if anything…it garnered a lot of respect from use “negro intellectuals”. LOL

I do actually enjoy some of Nicki’s music and her extremely wacky style but I have admired how very assertive she is. Knowing how she has to work 10 times as hard as her male counterparts I think she puts her all into her music, even if you don’t care for it. You can hear it when she has guest verses from male rappers, I don’t think she ever gets overshadowed by them. They are HER songs and I am never in any doubt that this is the case. Plus I honestly admire the fact that she dresses how she wants and says what she wants knowing that not only as a woman but as a woman of color in a male-dominated music genre she is going to be scrutinized constantly. I love that she has bigger balls than many of her male contemporaries.

I like Nicki, always have. Before she was big she used to do these hoodrat videos & tell people she was always going to keep a business mind and not be pimped by the industry; and I can’t say that she hasn’t done that. As far as her music goes, I stopped liking her music after the 1st album, but I really like the new features she’s been doing lately.

Nicki’s always been extra but she does drop gems and you can bet she will be respected…ya gotta give it to her….

I’ve seen this and other interviews that she’s done, and I was pleasantly surprised at how intelligent and introspective she is. Not because she’s Nicki Minaj, but because most of these artists are dumb as rocks.

I wasn’t a fan of hers (or anyone, hell, I don’t listen to the radio) in the beginning, because I saw all these crazy colors and didn’t know what the hell I was hearing. But then, I stumbled upon her earlier work and it was pretty damn catchy, next thing you know, I done memorized a whole song. I still rock “Roman’s Revenge” when I’m feeling aggressive and want to work out really hard or something. It’s hype music for me when I have to face something difficult.

I respect the fact that she is on top of her craft as a business woman and as an artist. She knows who she is and what she wants, and she does it. I want the same kind of career success that she has.

Agree. I would rather listen to Ciara sing a medley of Mariah Carey songs then listen to her music, BUT on this one, Nicki is right. Yep. She put her finger on the sexism that strong women, esp black women deal with every day. I did cackle at the “$50 clothing budget and sliced pickles”. I respect anyone who takes their place!

Not a fan of MUCH of Nicki Minaj’s music, but I do like her bravado/swagger. And, I know this opinion will (probably?) be unpopular, but I also really like the way both she AND Rihanna own their sexuality. They are sexy on their own terms (as opposed to being so at the behest of a man), and unapologetic about it. As a professional, mother of two in my mid-30’s, I just find that really cool (it’s like my inner bad-girl identifies with them). 🙂

When she first hit mainstream I didn’t care for her. I didn’t like the messages being sent to the youth. I still feel young girls will pay more attention to what they see and not what she’s saying, but my opinion of her changed as I saw more of her interviews. Plus, I actually like some of her songs and features (Save Me, Fly, Moment for Life). Imma just go’on and say it. My name is K and like Nicki Minaj, most of the time.

I’ve respected her game from jump. And say what you want, but she made Idol interesting last season, and gave honest feedback to the contestants. I know that has nothing to do with the story, but I just think Nicki gets a bad rap cause she’s Nicki. Chick knows what she’s doing, and works way harder than I have the patience for. Props to her!
