EBONY’s Trayvon Tribute Covers and #BackwardsBoycotts on Twitter

EBONY Magazine’s September issue has four powerful covers, dedicated to the memory of Trayvon Martin. One cover has Trayvon’s family (mom Sybrina Fulton, dad Tracy Martin and bro Jahvaris). The others have Spike Lee, Boris Kodjoe, Dwyane Wade and their sons rocking hoodies with the words “WE ARE ALL TRAYVON.”

EBONY Trayvon Covers

YES WE ARE! I am so here for these covers!

Most people have given EBONY props but you know everyone can’t be happy with everything.

There are white conservatives and Tea Party folks all in @EBONYMag’s mentions talmbout the covers are racist. Racists be so READY to call someone or something else racist though. They’re dusty pots waiting on the sideline waiting for any and all opportunity to call the kettle racist. Chile BYE!

But the absurd and hilarious part is them saying they’re gonna boycott EBONY.

Pause.

White people talmbout they’re boycotting EBONY is like me saying “I WILL NOT PAY MY COUNTRY CLUB DUES!” That will have as much impact as me saying I’ll never shop at Whole Foods again. No one curr! They can go have ALLL the seats.

Fucks I Dont Give gif

And now, Twitter (well, Brokey McPoverty) kicked off the #BackwardsBoycotts hashtag and hilarity is ensuing from it. Below are some of the best.

Oh Twitter… good times.

Again, shoutout to EBONY for these dope covers, though. Win.

The Ebony covers are haunting and the Tea Party needs to take a seat on a mountain top.

    The Ebony covers are YES!

I’m not sure what exactly they are boycotting? The name Trayvon? The story about “5 Ways to Stop Gun Violence?” Or “A Pray for Healing?”

Or maybe they are boycotting hoodies? That’s going to hurt the bottom line of Old Navy and American Apparel.

They should be really careful what they boycott or their hood will show.

Ebony wins all the way with these covers. They are absolutely haunting and bring tears to my eyes, especially the ones with Kodjoe and Dwyane Wade’s sons because…their sons are so teeny.

Looking at their sweet little-boy faces just brings home to me (again) that Trayvon was Sybrina and Tracy’s baby once upon a time too. And in their eyes (like every parent’s) he was still their baby even when he was a big, tall teenager.
