A Baby, A Wedding Dress and a Drag Down the Aisle: Failing Successfully

There is never a shortage of mess on these interwebs and last week, and I already blogged about the bridal party and their drunk in love routine. Wells, some woman named Shona Carter-Brooks was all over everywhere. I was gon let Shona be and let the rest of everyone deal with it but enough of you sent me the pic and told me to put my 2 cents in that I was left choiceless.

She decided it’d be a good idea to attach her one-month old baby to the train of her wedding dress, so when she walked down the aisle, the baby was right behind her.

Yes, this really happened.

Bride Baby Train

This is why we cannot have nice things. WHY WOULD YOU PUT YOUR FRESH OUT THE WOMB BABY ON YOUR DRESS?!?!?! That tulle doesn’t even GO with color newborn. UGH!

I just have nothing but questions here and can’t nobody give me answers.

1. Why? Seriously. WHY? It surely can’t just be because she wanted her newborn to be part of the festivities. Was her arm just too busy? Was there no way she could have possibly worn a satin sling to match her dress so the baby is being cradled in that? What was the motivation for this abomination?

I betchu she was all “We gon do this real different. People are gon be like ‘Oh that’s cute!'” NO WE WILL NOT, you misinformed summagoat. What is the matter with you, lady?!?

Fix It Jesus gif

b. How did she fasten that baby on that train? Is there a velcro belt or a cotton arm holding the baby to the train like so? Who helped her do it? That brings me to my next query.

iii. Where were the grandparents and the village? Sometimes, we come up with dumb ideas but the people around us need to keep us in check. Didn’t anyone say to her “Maybe you shouldn’t do this? In fact, let ME hold the baby.” Where was Mee-Maw and Pop-Pop in all this? Again, who was the enabler who helped with the baby fastening? I blame THEM for this because if everyone had given her a hearty NAWL, she wouldn’t have been able to pull it off.

Looking at the picture, you see the bald man in all black and glasses looking down at the baby like “I wish I could save you from this.” Where was everyone else?

Fools maleficent gif

Good sense called and it wants its security deposit back with interest ASAPtually! You gotta be a fool to think this was the move. Except, Miss Shona is standing super wrong and super strong in her foolishness. She took to Facebook to clapback at the haters and here’s what she had to say:

“I see how it works regardless the situation or purpose people gone have something negative to say! The answer is we do what we want when we want long as Jesus on our side everything worked out fine and gone continue to be fine. Our 1 month old was awake and well secured on my train. Most important while yall got ya feelings in us we had our hearts in Christ which covers all!! So keep ya mouths running for it was just that Exclusive and Epic enough we made top blog way from small town Ripley, TN and the social media doing what they do, TALK!!!! Who paid yall for yall comments, none so watch us as we do us! Too bless for mess!! Thank God we aint no celebrities oops got fans, guess we is! Sign off Mr & Mrs Brooks!!” – Shona Carter-Brooks

If she don’t go sit her raggelly yansh down somewhere. HAVE ALL THE SEATS IN MADISON SQUARE GARDEN, MA’AM! \__ \__ \__

Folks STAY trying to stunt but do the most with the least for it. “Too bless for mess.” LMAOOOO! I love Christians who use Jesus as their “Get Out of Jail Free Card.” By love, I mean side-eye the heck out of. Yall gon stop invoking the name of MY Lord to support your lack of behavior. NO MA’AM! The only thing more unwavering than her faith is her stupidity.

But she’s TOO BLESS FOR MESS!!!

Nene Girl Bye gif

Again, was common sense busy? Did it go on vacation and leave her to herself? That poor baby didn’t need to get dragged down the aisle to be a part of the wedding. Yall gotta start talking to your cousins and telling them to do better.

Team Bad Decisions’ annual conference be so PACKED, yo. Too many people are required to attend.

So whatcha’ll think about Shona and her dress with baby on the back?

P.S. Things like this is why the UNABLE TO CAN tshirt is so necessary to own.

I just imagine the baby rolling off on that carpet where extra ass Brother Vernon was just falling out and slobbering “in the spirit.”
You want the kid there that badly? Forego the bouquet and carry him/her.
This was foolish and her words made it WORSE!
Why couldn’t the baby have been waiting in Dad’s arms at the alter?

THANK YOU LUVVIE! I am in the midst of HOWLING laughing and Amening at the same time! I wanted to speak on this mess but after reading her “response” I didn’t want to give her any more seconds on her 15 minutes. And with all that yammering she STILL hasn’t explained the significance–is she trying to say the baby is part of the baggage she’s bringing to the altar? I don’t think MSG has quite enough seats for this one.

You have spoken well for ALL of us watching this effery unfold.

As a professional and certified meeting and event planner (and new mom) I can honestly say I am horrified by this behavior. And where was the half ass wedding planner who allowed this to happen? She doesn’t have the sense God gave the kardashians. Jesus is looking at God saying, ” why it happen.” And God replied, ” I got nothing for these fools.”

My first thought when you posted this pic last week was, ‘Where was Grandma?’ Cuz I don’t know any grandmama who would allow this asshattery to take place with her baby. No sir, no ma’am. No. If I were to take leave of my senses to even come up with the idea for this mess, my own late gran would have reached out from the Great Beyond to ‘cuff’ me in the forehead. My other gran, who is now confined to her bed would somehow find the strength to run me over with her wheelchair and my mother would rebuke me with the full force of the Holy Spirit. I know my sister would have karate chopped me in the th’oat and taken my child away. I can’t even see the most ratchet of mamas or grandmamas saying yes to this. They’re probably sitting up at the front of that church hanging their heads in shame at their girl’s silliness. Summagoat indeed.

    • MsQ
      June 4, 2014 at 9:49 am

My point exactly… my babies’ grandmothers & great grammies would have slapped me silly and took my baby from me, without a care in the world of my feelings.

GIRL! You win for summoning all the foremothers and their righteous anger at this foolishment! NOT NONE of my womanly ancestors or present circle of femininity would allow me to perform this massacre of good sense. They’d snatch that baby off the train and walk out en masse only to meet me in the parking lot to give me the Sister Circle Stompdown that I deserved. TUH!

    June 2, 2014 at 3:40 pm

    sigh.

To answer question B. I’m guessing she attached tied the baby on with the umbilical cord in some kinda way. because yes, that child is really fresh out the womb.

  14. howlingbanshee
    June 2, 2014 at 3:40 pm

Our ancestors did not perfect the art of wearing babies safely and securely on our backs over thousands of years for Sis. Carter-Brooks to have that child looking like a lost little angel from heaven that took a wrong turn at Cloud 66.

American women did not appropriate/discover/monetize-hell-out-of babywearing for Shona to be outchea actin’ like there were no options.

I am truly glad that the baby is alright.

And best wishes to the happy couple.

May their united stance against all this backlash, and their leanin and dependin on Jesus, strengthen their marriage and parenting skills for many years to keep.

So I have been lurking on her page, and this is the response from the wedding planner.

Kaye Jordon For everyone believing that the baby riding on the back of her mother’s wedding train, please take a look at the above painting by the great Annie Lee. This action has significant historical value and indicates the dedication of her mother (and father) toward caring for her child and family. We, throughout history have worked hard to do whatever necessary to take care of our own. A GOOD mother takes her child wherever she goes, even down the aisle. Oh, and by the way, the event was the couple’s SECOND wedding, not the first. This was simply the culmination of a dream deferred! Find the individuals blowing smoke into the face of an infant or those allowing children to hold weapons, and, let us not forget the child arguing with his mother while calling her by her first name! Most of the comments are from individuals who do not know, nor will ever meet this couple. I happen to know them both. In fact, for the gentleman who believed that the coordinator needs her butt beat, I was the coordinator and I remain intact! The wedding was beautiful, the decorations both beautiful and unique (I did those too). and the entire event and day was flawless! Too bad those with negative comments have so little to do that they indulge in making disparaging comments about people you don’t know! Could it be that you have nothing in your lives to occupy your time and space? Taking a picture from a beautiful, God sanctified event and turning it into a media circus is despicable. Why not find another activity to waste your time on? Leave these two alone, and THAT was directly from my heart!

they obviously don’t know how fragile babies are. A one-month old baby really can’t attend a wedding because she would have about 20 percent of her immunization at that point. I hope the baby does not become fatally ill after this indecent exposure. Can’t believe she thinks they are home free, hospital bills, sleepless nights and therapy in the near future.

Vera Wang need to issue a press release rebuking this foolishness. Nothing says I love you like putting your newborn on the ground and dragging it 10ft on a bed of tulle. If she wanted to be special why not get a old fashioned baby buggy and bling it our, or put down that hideous black bouquet and carry the child instead?

    • June 2, 2014 at 8:32 pm

Vera Wang is already on it, they’ve already released a statement saying they didn’t design the dress the woman is wearing, not even in the Vera Wang for David’s Bridal line. So basically old girl either lied or got lied to when she bought the dress. Either way, a mess.

I don’t know if I am more disgusted at the bride for being so belligerent and ignorant or at the friends and family who co-signed this mess. Where were the older women in the family? I can’t see a grandmother or auntie not speaking up on this foolishness when it was still in the planning stages. And then to bring in all this faux religiosity talking about being covered in the blood of the lamb to cover this nonsense. It’s a wonder she didn’t break out typing in tongues like prophetess Bynum.

now see, i think this could be the start of a new trend in bridal accessories,(especially with the amount of babies born before the nuptials…) ‘THE BABY POUCH!’ bedazzle and bejewel that sucker and strap it right on to the beautiful brides train! for an extra couple of dollars we can include a cleverly hidden pocket to store a couple of bottles and extra diapers and wipes. see, most of ya’ll are seein tacky and stuff…i’m seein $$$!

To the ‘wedding planner’ who seems to think that ‘ery one here and who has commented all over the world have nothing better do/say about a bride and Groom who thought it was perfectly acceptable to drag a 1 month old baby down the aisle on the back of a wedding train should not be allow to plan a cat’s funeral, let alone a wedding. Whether it was their first, second or 19th wedding, you can’t fix anyone’s mouth to say that this behavior was “acceptable”. If you had something to do with that, then shame on you. If the Tennessee Department of Child Services doesn’t come for every member of the bridal party, I’d be surprised. There were so MANY other ways to incorporate that infant OTHER THAN the back of her/his momma’s gown.

Now, before you start quote scripture and bring Jesus & the Lord into such foolishness, please be aware that the members of the Internet Universe (and Luvie’s Nation) did not do this tomfoolery, YOU GUYS DID. So don’t come bring the bible to justify your lack of taste, common sense and team poor decisions into this mess here.

The Lord God, Jesus, Buddha and the saints didn’t sanction ANY of that fragility mess right here. and please don’t play Art Historian on Annie Lee’s pictures… just don’t…you not qualified for that….Ms. Lee ain’t no bridesmaid in this wedding here…

Good mothers & father’s don’t drag their child down on the back of a wedding train.. they just don’t.

and yes, we got wayyy more things to do (like reading Luvie’s recaps of Scandal, True Blood & GoT) than to have to shake our heads to get the vision of that baby on the back of that dress out of our minds….

p.s. you made it our activity when you coordinated this tomfoolery and posted it on facebook…the internet never forgets.

I must cosign AND tangent on all of this regarding this so called “wedding planner” (AIR QUOTES). Why didn’t she suggest getting pretty little wagon or stroller decorated with flowers and have an honored guest roll the baby down aisle? THAT would have made for beautiful photos too, but noooo Shay Shay an ‘nem always gotta be ‘different’, huh? After my wedding, the hem of my dress was dirty by the time I made it to the reception because floors, even in a church, are dusty and DIRTY. She’s a complete lunatic for encouraging her client and most likely she’s the one that pinned the baby onto the dress for her.

To the wedding planner who sanctioned this, how about a child endangerment charge? One loose tack, or pin puncturing this child’s body; the dirt and dust and germs the child was exposed to from the carpet: the people at the wedding passing around a month old infant all of this could contribute to this child having health problems.

Big Mama knew what she was doing when she wouldn’t let a mother or a newborn out of the house before six weeks.

Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should. Think about the impact on your child. This was a second and probably unnecessary ceremony.

Don’t mix God up in your mess, be woman enough to own your ish. Everybody makes mistakes. Just don’t involve this child next time.

If she had any real sense and was truly blessed and wanted to honour her baby, she could’ve had the baby christened as part of her ceremony. Instead she chose to dishonour and endanger her newborn in the name of being unique. That whole church should be brought up on child endangerment charges. If you didn’t object to it, then you condone it.

Ok everyone I am feeling very very old after seeing this mess, I mean pic. I am 49 and from a generation where the bride wore white as an expression of her virtue and that is a modern take on wearing white. Of course the traditional concept is about virginity. Now I understand these are different times we are living in and sex before marriage is acceptable behavior. Besides I am not trying to be te morality police. However the irony of wearing a white wedding dress and dragging your new baby on your train is absolutely mind blowing. I am saying this because if I had been (heaven forbid) at this wedding I would have literally been in shock to see this travesty unfold. Also the scene I would have made after I recovered would have been the subject of social media debate.

My dear Luvvie I just love your takes and everyone who comments on these foolish choices.

    • Moni
      June 3, 2014 at 12:16 pm

Actually, the white wedding dress tradition arose because Queen Victoria wore one (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_wedding#History_of_the_white_dress). Before that, women wore a variety of colors, depending on preference and trend. White caught on amongst rich people as a way to show their wealth (similar to purple cloth back in the day). Society didn’t begin to equate white dresses with purity until after they had caught on as a wedding tradition.

yes, Jesus was there, he looks out for babies and fools, so if you are a baby of a fool Jesus stays close by all the time. I still need an answer for why she did this because there are so many other options for her, I can only think that she has no friends, and her family hates her.

  73. Camille

So, the wedding planner thinks because a woman picked cotton for half a living back in the day and likely had no choice but to bring her baby along because there was no on-site daycare for sharecroppers, that means this chick should put her one month old on a wedding dress and drag the baby down the aisle? The ass-backwardness of the folks trying to defend this mess is astounding. And I don’t care if the couple was married that day or last century, it still makes no sense to drag your child down the aisle. Ever. At all. For any reason.

  74. NiHi
    June 3, 2014 at 2:44 pm

Maybe if Mrs. I’mcoveredinthebloodofJesus had wrapped herself in HIM instead of her boo, she wouldn’t have had a baby to drag down the aisle. People kill me using Jesus when it’s convenient for them. Where was her bible when she and the Mr. were making the attachment to her train?

The wedding planner even said it was biblical or something. One of her friends even said she would like to do this when her wedding comes up because it was so different, unique, and refreshing. I don’t know what communal drugs they drinking but it must be good.

  77. June 3, 2014 at 6:51 pm

Did the dad really know? Because maybe (I can only imagine) this was some little surprise waiting for him. God Bless the child where two parents were in agreement on this.

And if you have to ‘splain several times to people the foolery (“No, the baby will be attached. C’mon. We covered in the blood it’s gonna be cute!”) then it.is.not.cute! I can’t imagine she only explained this cockamaimeed scheme once to people. (“My baby will be attached to my TRAIN! Yes, on the floor. G’uh!”)

  78. Annette
    June 3, 2014 at 8:09 pm

This shows she don’t have any judgement in doing what is best for this baby. It’s just a possession to do with what she wants. It makes me fear for this child. They better cue the Child Protective Agency cause this seems like a future case.

Guess she don’t think much of her child to drag her on the floor as if there is nothing wrong. Makes me wonder how she was raised. Looks like she resented the child. We seriously has black people need some major healing. I think she lost her mind. Just can’t think of anything funny, I am just shocked. She is definitely not in her right mind.
