Brandy, Queen Latifah, MC Lyte and Yo-Yo Performing “I Wanna Be Down” Was Everything!

I did not watch the BET Hip Hop Awards last night because I forgot and nobody reminds me of anything anymore (*side-eyes everyone*). Plus I had work to do.

I’m catching up with some of what I missed (amen, YouTube) and I got my entire LIFE with the performance that Brandy, Queen Latifah, MC Lyte and YoYo gave. “I wanna be down” IS MY FOREVER JAM!!! I just automatically hit my bankhead bounce like the correct 90s girls that I am.

But yes. These 4 powerhouses onstage singing and rapping like the BOSSES that they are fed my spirit! Watch:

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!! This just gave me everything I NEED!

I loved all of it. First, the alphets. The fact that they’re all styled to coordinate but not be too matchy-matchy. Leather pants on Queen and MC Lyte, leather thigh boots on Brandy, and leather pencil skirt on Yo-Yo. It works so well. The black and red color scheme. The fact that they all just look bad ass! YOU. BETTER. WERK.

And the white set against the dark clothing made them look like they were floating and OMG I FANGIRLED SO HARD!!! So perfect! ALL of it.

Then the performance. *lays out because it’s all too hot to handle* These women. These dope ass women!!!  The energy. The flow. The fly. I LIVE!!!

Amazing kelly-rowland gif

And the fact that none of them have dared to age. They’re living that unicorn tears face wash life. I’m so here for it.

This just really made me miss that era of music so much. I am so thirsty for 90s music right now. I want it to come back! And the collaboration of women in Hip Hop. I want that to come back too.

Can we have a music show where 90s music is performed by the artists who did them? 2 hours of just us jamming to 90s hits by our old faves. LORD, HEAR MY CRY!!! Music executives, make it happen.

But YES. This was amazing. I want more.

Did yall watch and get your life??

I loved it so much, I replayed it at least twice! Lol aside from the Mike Brown tribute at the end of Common’s performance, it was the best part of the show!

We ain’t forget. We are just so used to be underwhelmed that nobody cared about them durn BET awards. BUT if they had even HINTED at that reunion, I would have sat through every last bit of that nonsense to see it, just like I did when MTV said that NSYNC was reuniting (as the interwebs said about that: “Mylie Cyrus twerked longer than NSYNC reunited”) . So BOOOOOO @ BET with their wack marketing department. If we had known, every female from age 25-55 would have been sitting there waiting on it. Jerks.

    • October 15, 2014 at 11:08 am

The fools. We would have made it the #1 watched show of the night, if we knew. Imbeciles.

I saw a posting of it last week. Which is why I was sitting through the rest of the tomfoolery (minus Common, thank you for that bridge over troubled waters)

I’ve been watching and getting my life AWWLLLL morning long! I don’t have cable so I just lived vicariously through the tweets last night. I got to my desk today to watch and almost LOST it!!! They sounded and looked amaaaazing. Total fangirl moment. Someone on YouTube suggested a Ladies Night reunion performance. I’d love to see it although thinking of someone doing Left Eyes part gives me the sads. I love seeing my childhood faves perform when they still have it and can slay. *happy sigh*

I did a quick comparison in my mind to Nicki M’s recent Anaconda performance. Ain’t neve,,r no ever kind of way in hell that I would have thought female MC’s would devolve to the likes of Nicki. LOOK AT WHAT WE HAD! And now we have Black Barbie and her soft porn show.

    • October 15, 2014 at 11:33 am

To be completely fair, Nicki isn’t the first female rapper to exhibit that kind of sex appeal. (Cue: Lil’ Kim and Foxy Brown from the 90s). Although I’ll admit that Nicki Minaj has taken it up a few notches.

And the sheer fact that we don’t have an abundance of female rappers today like MC Lyte, YoYo and Queen Latifah to balance things out, makes the game seem that much more dismal.

I was bouncin and singing all the raps! I loved it! The outfits were fly. Brandy is such a pretty brown girl. It just made me happy.

  7. October 15, 2014 at 11:21 am

So FIRE!! That’s the only reason I watched the show …This performance along with Common’s and Doug E Fresh’s made the show worth watching. Everything else could’ve been left out. For a while, I forgot I was watching an award show !

I have literally had this on repeat for the last hour. I can not get enough!! Mc Lyte and Queen Latifah were my first female MC inspirations and this was just everything. When can I download this single, tho?

Yo. Bro. Bruh! BREH! This performance was everything and more! But what was sad is that half the performing acts and audience could not appreciate it because they were born when this song came out. 90’s babies missed out on all the fun. But do y’all remember when the remix for this initially dropped?! The hype was real.

Everyone 30+ got their life. The youngsters were not impressed. I personally hit my dougie so hard in the house.

    • October 15, 2014 at 11:55 am

25 here and I just LIVED! LOL I was like if they don’t do the hand dance I can’t fully support it. And then they did that ish in UNISON? yes ma’am!

Props to you Mara, you’ve restored my faith. The rest of your generation in the audience looked like “How many more minutes till we can Schmoney dance? get these old biddies off the stage”
Teach the rest of yo folk wassup

I watched just for Brandy. When Queen, Lyte and Yo Yo walked out, HUNTY… I screamed!!! It was everything! They rocked it, and well. While somehow remaining fully clothed.
Some of these young ones need to take notes.

    October 15, 2014 at 11:30 am

So, I’m the only one who thought they looked lonely as hell and unpracticed? The white background highlighted the fact they they needed some dancers/mimes/choir/stage props/random nigs from the audience on stage to fill in the space.

Nonetheless, that remix is and always will be the jam.

    • Tone
      October 15, 2014 at 11:48 am

Really? You thought so? In my opinion, I thought the simple background is all that was needed. It put the focus on the talent.

    • Marci
      October 15, 2014 at 2:43 pm

Kendra I think you were the only one! Lol. The blank white canvas of the stage was reminiscent of the video for the I wanna be down remix…. In the video there were no props, no background dancers – nothing. They just brought the video to the stage.

The 90s were THEE best! Miss the music of that era so much. Got into Brandy circa Full Moon (I was a silly teen caught up in the manufactured Brandy v Monica shenanigans and was firmly Team M, but that album was the shizzle!) I always get my life whenever folks from the 90s heydays does a performance like this, showing these nowadays ‘artistes’ how it’s done. I didn’t watch the show, wouldn’t have watched the show if they paid me in diamonds, but I had to catch this performance on Youtube first thing today. Loved seeing these ladies up there looking and sounding as fly as ever. Brandy’s voice box was specially anointed by God Himself, I swear. Wish they had got some more love from the audience though. Or was everybody so in awe of the awesomeness on stage that they just wanted to drink it all in? I’ll go with that version of events… Lol!

  18. October 15, 2014 at 12:00 pm

This is why we can’t be friends! Why did I click on this link? You got me over here head bopping instead of doing WERK. GEEZUS help me! I can’t even remember what I was working on. Instead, I’m trying to find my “jamz” CD circa 1995.

    Yep. You’re the only one.

I’ve always loved this collab. As well as the Ladies Night collab. I agree with Luvvie. Bring back great collaborations and good 90’s music (80’s too while ya at it). I’m through with the “bird-chested men of rap” and their disrespectful, non-lyrical prowess.

I watch Latifah’s talk show and she mentioned it yesterday and for one hour and forty minutes, cause I had theTV on mute I had my mouth hanging open to the acts I saw…didn’t even hear them, I was …anyways..

They were fire! And the minute Latifah spit out her verse, I lost it! I agree with Luvvie, can we get a show for the 90’s era?! I also love New Jack swing, so if you can go from ’87 -2005 I would appreciate it!

Jesus loves me, this I know! HOW you ask? Cuz He allowed me to stay AWAY from this awards show until, literally, Doug E. Fresh was walking up to accept his award! So, I ONLY saw him & Snoop, um, a cypher (I admit, Remy Ma and Papoose were cute!) and then I changed the channel. I flipped back literally as Brandy was walking out! It was awesome and fantastic and all those wonderful words! Every one of those ladies looked GOODT (ain’t aged a DAY) and I wanted to find someone to share in the greatness of the moment! Shoulda known I could count on you, Luvvie!

Thisss is why I am glad I was born in 1983 so would be old enough to experience the music, movies and crazy fashion, lately I my friends and I have been thinking about the best music ever, not only the best R&B music bust also some of the best gospel songs where from the 90’s. We got to experience groups like EnVogue, SWV, 112, Jodici, Boys II Men, The Back Street Boys, 98 degrees ( who I swore was a black group till I saw a music video, those guys could sing), we had men like Baby Face, John B, Toni Braxton, Whitney, Brandy and Monica.

I could go on and on, but after watching the video, I just had to play more on youtube.

Had no intentions of watching the show, but saw Brandy’s tweet about it a few minutes before the performance so I was able to tune in and watch. Loved every minute. Sad that the few women rappers we have, who aren’t really all that great, are tearing each other down.

I’m glad to know I’m not the only one that’s been watching this all morning. Brandy’s runs were EVERYTHING!! And I LOVE the fact that NONE of them were doing too much because they KNEW they didn’t need to. (See: JC from the Nsync reunion performance AFTER the music already stopped and don’t get me start on Marlon Jackson during the anniversary special back in 2001). Also, the level of noise from the crowd when the Queen stepped out gave me what I needed!! #respect #bringbackthe90s

    It was EVERYTHING!!
The only thing that pissed me off was that the audience was NOT hyped enough to be witnessing such greatness.
