Hella Disrespectful: Insecure Season 2, Episode 7 Recap

Let’s talk about episode 207 of Insecure, peeps!

Judgment – Molly is on the phone GOING OFFFF to Issa about Daniel’s face shot. Molly tells her she ain’t judging her, and that folks are just out here watching PornHub. Since they’re sharing all these embarrassing secrets, she admits to her bestie that she’s still sleeping with Dro. Issa got questions and Molly is feeling judged. Ya know what? Bofadem will just do what they wanna do and leave it there.

Don’t Got Y’all – Issa is on the bus and she sits next to a Latino student who pulls out a PSAT book. She tells him to come through We Got Y’all for tutoring and he says Mr. Gaines told him the program is full. MMHMM, issa. The man ain’t a problem, right?

mmhmm

Friend Zone – Molly is back in Chicago, riding with Quentin talmbout snacks and whatnot. He then gets serious and encourages her about the meeting she will be having with her bosses about getting a raise. He says he hopes they see her value. ANDDD he’ll be in LA in a few weeks, and wants her to show him around. Our girl gets the nervous look on her face. I think she’s friend-zoned Q, and he is crushing on her.

New Thing – At work, the coworkers ask Lawrence if him and Aparna are an item since they went to an event together. He says they’re just hanging out, and she shadily agrees. I felt a tinge of butthurtedness there. Lawrence goes to see Aparna to see if all is well between them. He doesn’t want folks in their business and he doesn’t want to go too fast. She says they’re all good and they’re still on for drinks as planned.

Reunited – Issa goes to Frieda’s desk at work to talk about how to increase Latino enrollment at East 41st.  Frieda agrees with her plan and warms up a little. Well, she warms up a lot and apologizes to Issa for being an ice queen to her recently. Work wives reunite!

Reminder – Molly is back in LA and Dro meets her at her place. She got him some Garrett’s popcorn from Chicago (CHITOWN STAND UP!) as a gift. Dro talks about Derek’s birthday, which Tiffany is putting together, and included a style scheme. He mentions that him and Candice have been warmed to stick to it too and Molly gets weird. Of course his WIFE will be at all their mutual friend’s birthday party. He tells her not to worry about it.

Bawse Up – Molly is meeting with her boss and is bawsing herself up as he tells her that it is early to talk re-negotiation before her annual review. She reminds him that people have been promoted to partner outside of regular time frames so the firm has recognized hard work without time limits before. It should certainly do that now too. Her boss stands firm and says when her review comes around the year after, they can take it into consideration. Well shit. Being Black at work is tough. Sometimes you ask, and you still don’t receive. It ain’t fair.

Losing Gaines – Issa and Frieda are handing out We Got Y’all flyers by the school buses at East 41st when Mr. Gaines walks by. Issa stops him and reminds him that the program is inclusive, and he immediately gets on the defensive. Their program is full, like they wanted but is she “All Lives Matter”-ing him? SIR, these kids are ALL minorities in this world. Frieda comes over to cosign Issa and Gaines just laughs in their faces and walks away, after taking the chance to gripe about Mexican kids. He didn’t take them serious one bit. That asshole.

Invite – Lawrence tells Aparna that he needs to push back their drink date to 10, instead of 7 because he needs to go to a birthday party. Issa will be there but that doesn’t discourage Aparna. She says she could just come with him. Ma’am, you already too comfortable. And his wack ass says a hesitant “sure.” Bruh. NO. NAWL. ALL THE NOPES.

Sorry Not Sorry – Daniel calls Issa as she’s getting ready for the birthday party. He apologizes for the rocket launch, and she tells him he humiliated her. After he begs, and she’s about to acquiesce, he says they’re even now because they’ve both did messed up things to each other. Uh oh. This ain’t an eye for an eye (hehehehe). So was it for revenge? AW NAWL. She tells him to never call her again and hangs up. These are the times when the old school phones woulda come in handy. When you could literally slam the phone down on someone’s ear. She storms into Ahmal’s car and slams the door.

Party Time – Derek’s party, hosted by Tiffany, is in full swing. Kelli brought the dude from the diner. Things might even be getting serious because she tells Molly that she’s going to their mosque with his parents the next week. WORD? Aight den! Right then, Dro and Candice show up to the pordee. Dro makes it to Molly first, and notices that she has on a dress he considers a favorite of hers. Yup, and she did that on purpose. When Candice walks up, Molly is being slightly weird, not knowing how to behave with the woman whose husband she’s sleeping with. They share an awkward hug, and Candice spills some of her drink. Dro goes to get her a fresh one and the two women banter about the bartender.

Tiffany chimes a wine glass to announce to her guests to take their seats. Molly sits immediately next to Dro, and Candice is on the other side of him. Tiffany tells her she has to move because there are place cards to indicate everyone’s rightful seating. Oop. In walks Issa and her brother, Ahmal. She’s determined to not start drama with Lawrence when she sees him there. Issa sees Candice, and asks Molly how her night is going. HA! Shade.

In walks Lawrence. With Aparna. To this intimate dinner party with friends of his. Where his “JUST BROKE UP WITH” ex is at. The whole table look at them and Lawrence gives a weak ass explanation that he didn’t know it was a sit down thing.

Ok so you ain’t bother to ask if you could bring someone to this? Sir. In the words of every Nigerian parents, “he is an IJOT.”

Disrespect – The table is full of awkward dynamics and the conversation is slightly strained. Molly is trying to add her 2 cents but being on the other side of the table makes it hard for them to hear her. Issa orders a whiskey, because she gon need a drink to get through this shit. And Lawrence is on the other side looking goofy. The couple sitting across from Lawrence and Aparna ask how they know Tiffany and Derek. He admits that he met them through his ex, who went to college with them. You see the layers of disrespect here? I do.

Real Talk – Issa and Lawrence step outside and go at it about each other’s situations. Yes, she’s still having sex with the man she cheated on him with. And yes, he had sex with a bank teller while his dead on arrival app ain’t doing nothing. She accuses him of being a bum and he calls her a hoe. OUCH.

The argument is interrupted when Aparna comes outside. He grabs her hand and they leave.

Bathroom Break – Inside, they sing happy birthday to Derek. Dro gets up to go to the bathroom and Molly follows him. He apologizes for not being able to chat with her much, and she tells him she sees how good him and his wife are together. He says they have something special too. Bruh. Nah. But before you could say “don’t do it” they are in the bathroom getting it all the way in. Faints These two. Molly’s all lust drunk and smiley. He says he’ll get back to the dinner first and then she can come after him minutes later. When Molly steps out the bathroom, Issa is waiting for her. She helps her fix her hair and dress. Molly removes the tag that is still on Issa’s dress. She was gonna return it. HA! I know that struggle.

Molly calls her mom back finally. She asks her how she stayed with her father after he cheated on her. “I know he made me feel special more than he hurt me.”

What Now? Lawrence is driving, looking mad tense and Aparna asks if he’s okay. They go for drinks and Lawrence kisses her. Molly walks in her door and gets a text from Dro. He wants to get together when he’s in town in a few days. Molly replies saying she can’t do what they do anymore. Issa gets home and there’s a note on her door. It’s a notice of rent increase. FAQUE. She sees the burn mark on her ceiling and kicks her dinner table. She starts destroying the whole place. Pissed.

DEEPEST SIGH EVER Ok. Sooo the self-sabotage is real with all of them and everything is going wrong.

There’s Issa, who decides to take her frustrations out on her own property. She can say goodbye to her security deposit. She’ll probably end up owing her apartment managers money. Out here acting like she ain’t got sense. You better take up a boxing class or karate or something. Don’t be throwing your dinner table and bookcases against the wall.

stop gif

LAWD. I get it. Nothing is going right for her right now, and she doesn’t seem to have an outlet. I feel for her on that. However, maybe she oughta stop and see that she exacerbates a lot of situations in her life through avoidance or straight denial. She finally sees she was dead wrong about waiting this long to see Mr. Gaines is being an irresponsible administrator by locking out the Latino kids from getting extra help. Her treating Daniel badly has been thrown in her face, and she doesn’t think she is culpable. And Lawrence bringing his new whatever to a joint party put her over the edge. Him calling her a ho had to sting too. Plus she ain’t got a functioning car and her rent is going up. Issa is going through it!

Molly is working her ass off yet not getting the pay she deserves, while her white coworker is making so much more than her for doing less. But her biggest frustration is this thing with Dro. This grey area that cannot be defined because the other person is already in a clear and defined marriage. Some people can deal with the grey, but others get driven mad by it. Here she is with her best guy friend, having random sex in restaurant bathrooms. And then knowing that there isn’t much that could happen from it. So that text message she sent to Dro about not being able to do it anymore? It’s wishful thinking from her. She ain’t done with him yet.

And I gotta say. I don’t know if I believe that Dro is in a mutual open marriage, where him and Candice are super open with each other on sleeping with other people. Candice has NO CLUE he’s sleeping with Molly. The best case scenario is that he’s told her he has a lover, but didn’t say her name. The worst case scenario, which I think is more likely, is that Candice knows NOTHING (like Jon Snow) about him sleeping with other people. Either way, this won’t end well.

So there’s Lawrence, the perpetual backwards hustler. I don’t care that he’s dating a coworker. Well, ok I am side-eying it a little because odds are, he’s about to create an awkward work situation WHEN (not if) it goes wrong.

But what he is doing that makes no sense is allowing it to be public so soon. What is up with all of them and their INSTA-PUBLIC statuses for people they don’t even have titles for? I’m not taking someone I’m on date 2 with to a party where all my friends will be. Why do all’at? You don’t even know if this person gon be date 3 material. Slow your roll and move in silence for a hot second. Even more important, Lawrence brought Aparna to this gathering where he knew Issa would be. Either he is just a dumbass or he is being willfully obtuse. I think it’s the latter. He knew that wasn’t gonna be well-received by the squad, yet he did it. And who told him it was okay to do a surprise show up with a date to a party? He just ain’t got no broughtupsy.

From the preview I thought Candice knew. Her eyes were all shifty-eyed and that was awkward in the beginning. I’m not sure now, after watching the episode. Doesn’t really matter after the bathroom escapade. He certainly didn’t want everyone to know about that. It’s one thing to be ‘open’ and another to be classless about it. Dro and Molly are slipping into the latter and she knows it.

She ain’t done with him yet but I don’t know why. She grew up with a great, intact family. She knows her worth. Why is she always so desperate for men who are unavailable to her and rejects or feels nothing for men who genuinely are ready for her?

    Go back to therapy, Molly!

I thought that the greeting between Candace & Molly was so awkward that Candace had to know something. Otherwise, why be so weird standing next to Molly? It wasn’t that way at all when they ran into each other at the cupcake shop.

    1. What happened to Flava Flav?
    2. They are under-utilizing Ahmal. I need more of him, specifically with Kelly.
    3. I appreciate that Molly didn’t take to therapy in the first few episodes. She’s not ready to do that work. Very typical of folks who are new to therapy. In order to do it and do it right, people usually have to hit a “rock bottom” and that looks different for everyone. All signs say she’s on her way though.
    4. Issa needs to go to therapy with Molly…

This episode just annoyed me. As in, I’m mad at EVERYONE. What is Issa doing? And why isn’t Molly disturbed by Dro’s teeth? Why is Lawrence so consistently tone deaf to his own stupidity? And why can’t we have more scenes with Ahmal and Kelly?

Thanks for this recap, Luvvie. Please sign me up for Team Everyone Needs to Get Cussed Out.

I didn’t want to say anything about Dro’s teef, but since you did….he was fine up until then. I don’t trust him, either. I also agree about Ahmal and Kelly. We also need more of Lawrence’s friend, Chad. Molly better stop overlooking Quentin. I still don’t know why Issa is so mad at Daniel over the explosion. She’s a smart girl…she knows how the body works. And this week destroying her own apartment? I didn’t think WE did that.

        Brown girl, pushing 40.

That expression of rage is a personality thing not a ‘them’ thing. I learned to patch drywall after a particularly rough time in 2008. It happens.

I do NOT get however, why she’s SO MAD at Daniel. I get expressing embarrassment and explaining HOW it made her feel. But she is just going ham for no reason.

I think Issa subconsciously wanted to sabotage her and Daniel and was looking for a direct way out or something to be mad at him about so she could cut him off. I think she believes Daniel is a large part of why she and Lawrence aren’t together anymore, but its not Daniel’s fault, its HER fault.

Also I think everything was fine until Daniel wanted to play tit for tat. If he felt some type of way about her embarrassing him, that should’ve been a conversation they could have been had before her carried on with her, but noooo he’s Mr. Cool so he said “ehh don’t worry about it Iss” knowing he still felt some type of way. Daniel is Insecure too.

I disagree that Molly isn’t done with Dro. Her conversation with her mom confirmed that the love between a husband and wife is stronger than the lust of a side chick. She knows that even if(when) Candice finds out, Dro will want to make his marriage work over his friendship with Molly and Candice will more than likely stay with her husband and NOT be friends with Molly. Molly will lose 2 friends

This was my read on it too. Her mom confirmed that the marital bond is stronger than outsiders. And she’s realized she will never “have” Dro. But unfortunately, she is now going to lose him for good. They can’t go back.

The thing with Lawrence that perplexes me is the fact that he felt like it was too early for Tasha to bring him to a cookout, but didn’t think it was too early for Apollonia/Al-copernicus (or whatever her name is…I don’t give a crap) to come to this gathering.

Lawrence’s work situation about to be super messy since Aparna already slept with the guy who eats cricket chips? In addition he had a three way with two chicks he met at the grocery store. And he called Issa a hoe. Issa slept with Daniel out of frustration with Lawrence sitting his raggedy ass on the sofa watching television all day. He dated her for five years and lived with her for two. Yet he could not do anything special for her birthday. Buying a bunch of random stuff from the dollar store. Lawrence is clueless.

This is what I didn’t understand about Lawrence, those weren’t technically your friends. Those are Issa’s friends that you got to know cause you were an extension of her. Boy bye. They never got proper closure cause if they did it wouldn’t be all dat. Smh at all of them ????

Because Tiffany is messy, nobody peeps but I do. She likes to shed light on everyone else’s issues so she and Derek can remain the perfect center of them all.

She forever trying to read somebody or play them, but never shares her struggles or issues so she can get read back. Yes Derek and Lawrence are friends but Tiffany had control over the whole party. She ain’t slick.

Just like she lowkey (high key) tried to embarass Molly about sitting next to Dro. She could’ve whispered that to her instead of sayin MOLLY all loud

Issa needs to stop sleeping on Daniel. He has been nothing but decent to her. Bye Lawrence. Not feeling him at all. Tasha read him for exactly who he is. Dro is no good. At all.

Amen to Tasha’s read of Lawrence.

  14. Candace Not Mrs. Dro
    September 6, 2017 at 11:53 am

    1. Candace knows. Her greeting to me says she knows. It was super awkward on both their sides.

    2. I think that line from Mom “He made me feel special/loved more than he hurt me” is only gonna drive Molly further into Dro. You would think that she would apply that knowledge to being the side chick but I don’t think she sees herself that way yet. She’s staying with Dro because he makes her feel special/loved more than she feels hurt. She’s only hurt by him (at this point) when they can’t be public or he has to run due to husband responsibilities.

    3. Issa is tripping with this whole Daniel thing. Like she was tripped when it first happened and she definitely tripped on the apology phone call. She’s smart. She knows it wasn’t revenge… it was just a comparison, a dumb one but a comparison nonetheless.

I DONT WANNA TALK ABOUT LAWRENCE AKA #TEAMBADDECISIONS… he frustrates my life. I feel like he’s so passive and his life is happening to him. Like BOY get a grip.

I have to be honest, tearing up stuff gets rage up outta your system. I recently just donated a small home’s worth of stuff to just go on and start over, but a lot of it, I just ripped up and threw away. As I pitched item after item into the dump, I just felt amazing.

It was so gratifying to just get rid of possessions that I just didn’t need. Now, Issa tore up her apartment, which was a bit dramatic, but I get that shit. Sometimes it has to all burn down so that you can rebuild it better. But yeah, her ass is gonna be paying that landlord.

And I love this show! I am much older and wiser now, but dammit, I was Issa with my own Lawrence. I really want them to be done with each other, but I got a feeling they are going to try to reconcile. And I love these recaps and errbody’s comments!

I’m late but still wanna comment. I think Dro is being 100 with Molly about his open marriage. He’s not just some dude she knew from round the way; he’s a good friend and family friend. Most everything we’ve seen from him suggests he genuinely cares for Molly. I don’t think he’d lie to her about something so easily exposed or confirmed and risk losing a lifelong friend. Is he tacky for the bathroom sex with his wife in the bldg? Yes. Is he insensitive to Molly’s tendency to get caught up? Probably. But I think he’s being straight up and offered her an option that was hers to decline or accept. That is what this is really about though for me – Molly’s choices and doing what’s right for her, professionally and personally. Watching all the couples and exes at that dinner was interesting in that for all the betrayals and trust issues past and present, Dro/Candace might be the best couple on the show. Lol. The writers have been purposefully vague about the details of their relationship so I guess we’ll find out.
